If the groupwise system Internet addressing settings does include the idomain of the exchange server then the mail will route out through the exchange gateway when sending from gw to exchange. Mail should still route it:
if exchange idomain is in internet address then the gw system thinks it is internal mail and routes to Ex gateway
if exchange idoamin is not in internet addressing then the mail will route out the gwia. (only if intenet adressing over rides are used on the externals IA over ride page.)
You can have the same Idomain for both systems just fine.

Actually this does work fine as long as you don't have duplicate internet
email addressed in both systems. External email can be sent directly from
the originating system, and you can specify which system is the primary mx
record for the system.
Email between the systems is handles by the address books/contacts managed
by the gateway process.
We did this as part of a migration and it worked well.
